What’s a Spray Rose? { Spring Prom Flowers Twin Cities }

Hey all! Welcome back to our blog! Are you done with Prom yet? Or, is yours still coming up? Prom seems to be spread out over about six weeks this year which, for us, makes it feel like a really long time. For us, that also means a lot of corsages, and boutonnieres, being made. (Did you know that we create each, and every, one by hand? The only thing we purchase is the beaded part of the bracelet.) One of the most popular flowers we use when we make our corsages is the Spray Rose. And, one of the biggest questions we get from you is, “What’s a Spray Rose?”. In today’s blog, we thought we share the differences between a Spray Rose, and a regular Rose…

The biggest difference you notice right away, is their size. Spray Roses look just like a miniature version of a regular Rose–they’re about half the size.

The name comes from the ‘spray’ of buds that appear on the stem of the plant–they stay nestled together, in a small cluster, despite being on one stem. They also open separately–so, one may still be a bud, as the one next to it is wide open.

They can be grown in pots–even indoors. (They will bloom throughout the year if they are kept indoors.) In fact, these are often the little pots of roses you see at the grocery stores, especially around Valentine’s Day. (They are also called ‘Sweetheart Roses’.)

Spray Roses have much shorter, and weaker, stems than the classic Rose. This makes them ideal for smaller arrangements, and corsages.

Other than those few, and pretty obvious, differences–Spray Roses are, actually, pretty similar to their larger counterparts. They look incredibly similar, the colors meanings are the same, and the smell is just as sweet. So, the next time someone mentions ‘Spray Roses’ hopefully now, you’ll know just what they’re talking about. 🙂
