I don’t know, you guys. I mean, we’re pretty much always on board with Pantone, and their color of the year. It inspires us, at least for a bit, in our arrangements. It inspires us in our personal decorating–at least in the way of smaller home accessories. Pantone’s, color-of-the-year, is a nice way to breathe a little bit of light into an, otherwise, pretty blah season. (Winter here, in Minnesota, is basically grey, white, and, if we’re lucky, a bit of blue when the sun randomly appears in the sky.) Having an ‘official’ color named, during a very un-colorful time, is super nice actually. However, here we are, in January of 2019, still trying to get on board with this year’s color–Living Coral. We really are trying. I mean, it IS a beautiful color for flowers. We have a gorgeous rose that, within the silky folds of its petals, loves to flirt around with Living Coral. We also have a gorgeous Carnation that breathes a beautiful life into that shade. However, many of us around here also lived through the early 90’s, and this color just screams outdated interior design.
Coral, to a couple of us, should have stayed early 90’s, and no later than that. Floral fabric was everywhere; and, within that floral fabric was, of course, coral-colored flowers. (You guys, couches, were like this. And, so was bedding. And, even curtains. Coral–not always the EXACT ‘Living Coral’ shade–was the ‘it’ color back then. We still know a woman who only wears her coral shade of lipstick–the same shade that she wore back in 1991.)
Because of our biases, we don’t love the choice this year. However, we also, completely, GET, this color-of-the-year. The early 90’s (as well as any ‘olden days’), always seems like simpler times. (Because EVERYTHING is simpler when you’re younger, right!? We just ‘played’ house back then–back in the good ol’ days.) ‘Living Coral’ isn’t divisive in any way–it has no political, or country, affiliation. The coral color is just neutral, it’s nostalgic, it’s bright, and it’s happy. Plus, the 90’s are ridiculously trendy right now with the teens. Nirvana, flannel, Doc Martens, and crop tops are everywhere. FRIENDS is one of the coolest shows for high schoolers to watch, and scruncii’s are, once again, holding up the awesomest hair-do’s.
So, despite the fact the some of us don’t love ‘Living Coral’, we also have to respect that it’s a wonderful choice of color right now. It is, actually, the most genius color Pantone could have went with. It’s totally drama free (except if you hate 90’s bedding), and it’s just, simply, pretty. It’s a color without a bunch of baggage.
Anyway, what do you think of their choice? What color would you have chosen this year!?
Anyway, what do YOU think? Will you be decorating with this color?
