Caring for the Croton { Twin Cities Fall Flowers and Plants }

Hello! Welcome back to the Blog at Main Floral. Today, we’re going to continue on with our plant care series today–before moving onto something different next week. Today, we thought we’d talk about the Croton. You’re probably seeing them everywhere lately–they’re the plant with the thick, colorful, leaves. We have them in our outdoor display, and they are all over at the stores right now. Crotons are one of our biggest sellers–especially this time of the year. We think they tend to be extra popular right now because of their beautiful, Fall-like, colors. They look fantastic in any fall display–inside, or out. Unlike many

seasonal favorites that are gone, as soon as the season moves on–the Croton can, easily, be cared for throughout the rest of the year! In case you find yourself with a new Croton, here are some simple care tips to keep them happy, and growing, as the year goes on.

Light:

Crotons grow best, outdoors, in subtropical areas–think Florida. (Though they are native to Southeast Asia.) However, they are perfectly content up here, in MN, as long as they can stay pretty warm, and in bright light. They do best in in East, West, or South facing windows. In the summer, you can bring them outside–they love the warmth. If your Croton isn’t getting enough light, new leaves will be less colorful.

Water:

Water your Croton as the dirt dries out. Your plant likes stay moist–but, not overly wet. Since Crotons do love the more tropical locations–they love a good, weekly, misting. If it gets too thirsty, the leave will all drop down–a simple watering should perk them right back up though!

Soil:

A regular potting mix works well for this plant. Fertilize in the spring/summer months. You can re-root this plant quite easily–just take a 4-6 inch cutting, remove the lower leaves, and place in water.

All-in-all, a Croton is one of the easier houseplants around–and, this is the perfect time of year to pick one up. If you’d like to order one, online, from us (for you, or for someone else), click here:
